Reaching sexual maturity at around five years of age, the Florida box turtle has been reported to keep growing for at least 20 years, though the growth rate begins to slow over time. Young turtles are primarily carnivorous, feeding on everything from slugs and frogs to snakes and birds. At five or six years old, they transition to a more herbivorous lifestyle which will keep them fed throughout the rest of their lives.
