A study published in Cognitive Processing found a surprising connection between dark humor and intelligence. Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna, led by Ulrike Willinger, asked 156 participants to evaluate 12 morbidly humorous cartoons—rating both their understanding and enjoyment. The results showed that people who appreciated the dark humor the most also scored higher on both verbal and nonverbal intelligence tests and tended to have higher levels of education. In contrast, those
